I started at Northwestern University Library as the Web Technologies Department Head in September 2009. By August 31, 2010, my team had launched a new website. The site hadn’t been redesigned in more than 5 years, and the architecture hadn’t been revised in over 7 years. About the new site:

was the library’s first content management system implementation (ever)

migrated from Dreamweaver mini-sites to Drupal 6 content management system

launched revised architecture, content, photos

site included new landing page design

used Solr enterprise search for website search

took 3 months to build (3 full-time workers, 3 student employees)

site includes dynamic news, hours, and location content

See before and after:

When I first came to Northwestern University, it was obvious that the Information Technology (NUIT) Web site needed a redesign. However, with project priorities, resources, etc. it wasn't at the top of the organization's list.

The Original Design

The design did not reflect Northwestern University branding.

The site was in table format and not W3C compliant.

Content overload and poor use of graphics throughout the site. Users were unable to identify themselves on the site, and navigate to information relevant to them.

Site hadn’t been updated in over 5 years.

The site is a service-driven site, however services and navigation weren’t clearly organized.

The Redesign & Site Improvements

Branding: the site reflects Northwestern University colors and images.

W3C Compliance: Table design was removed, and CSS styles were applied.

Unified Design: Departments within the organization were anxious to receive training and migrate content to the new site.

Social Media: The site now has RSS feeds, Blog capabilities, a YouTube campaign video, podcasts, webinars and more.

Content Reviewed: Organized home page, deleted legacy documentation and content.

Added “Mobility” Section

Improved navigation: There’s a consistent header and footer throughout the site.

About Web Accessibility
